You could book a small riad in the city for the day to store your luggage and use their changing facilities, then head out to the souks. Alternatively, most of the larger hotels, such as the Four Seasons, offer day passes or pool passes, so you could relax in the sunshine before heading home.
What do I need to bring?
A recommended kit list will be included in your Welcome email once you've booked, but think 'pack for all seasons'!
Marrakesh in January is generally pleasantly warm and sunny during the day, but temperatures drop at night, and there may be snow on the hike into the Atlas mountains. So lots of layers, hats, gloves, workout gear and swimwear!
What is the local currency?
The currency in Marrakesh is the Moroccan Dirham (MAD), which is made up of 100 centimes. When it comes to Marrakesh currency, the most important thing for you to know is that the Dirham is non-convertible. And that means it’s illegal to take it in or out of the country, so you’ll need to take your spending money to Marrakesh in your own currency, and then change it into the local currency when you arrive.
It’s easy to exchange your currency for Marrakesh currency when you arrive at the airport. However, you’re more likely to get a better rate when you arrive in the centre of Marrakesh, either at major hotels or the Bureau de Change. Remember to keep your receipt in a safe place, as you may need to convert your dirhams back before you leave the country.
Another option is to withdraw your Marrakesh currency directly from ATM machines. It’s worth noting that credit cards are widely accepted here, but there may be a surcharge for using them, especially in smaller shops and restaurants. Just remember to inform your bank that you’re travelling to Morocco before you leave your own country.
It’s advisable to take small denominations of cash when you’re visiting the souks (markets).
